Weekend 27 - 29 May: Over the past weekend our teams played at several different clubs. Following are a couple of match reports from games played by our teams.
Surfers U11's vs Palm Beach Alleygators
A great game on Saturday for U11's with a 65/5 win. There was some great
Surfers U12's vs Helensvale Hogs
The much-awaited top of the table clash saw the two unbeaten teams, the Hogs and Dolphins, entertain a massive home crowd with free flowing rugby.
The Dolphins targeted specific opposition strengths and weaknesses at what was an immense week in training. The boys were extremely professional all week with their game preparation. Key areas for this week were low physical cleanouts to speed up the ruck, structured inside
The Surfers boys took the game plan from paper to the field with absolute perfection. The forwards blew Helensvale off the paddock with clinical, domineering, low, physical clean outs in the first half, which set a beautiful platform for our sizzling backs. Surfers jumped out to a 24 to nil halftime lead. Like any good side, Helensvale came back really hard in the 2nd half.
Surfers contained their opposition's moments of brilliance well, to finish victorious at 36 to 14. The coaching and management group are all extremely proud of the boys unsurpassed effort, determination and vigilance displayed for such an important game.
Special mention to Dan Waller and Kyle, adapting remarkably well to late positional changes (into the forwards) and to Rocco’s defence against an opposition player that possess significant attacking flair.
Surfers U14's vs Helensvale Hogs Blue
The Surfers Dolphins U14’s (“Surfers”) lost their opening round match to the Eagles but since then have been unbeaten in club competition. Last Saturday the 28th May 2016 was only our second home game this year and saw 6 boys downwith injuries and flu but the team still recorded a 50-14 win over Helensvale. Surfers have now finished second on the ladder at the end of the first round and now go into theplayoffs which start on Saturday June 11th.Congratulations to 4 of our boys who have also been selected for the Cyclones squad that willrepresent the Gold Coast at the Queensland Rugby Junior State Championships being BlakeThwaites, Samuel Gordon, Nathaniel Espiritu and Jordan Sergis. We wish them well.Special mention goes out to one of our best players William (Will) Ledingham who having justrecovered from a badly broken finger (our for 8 weeks) managed to sustain another game dayinjury in his comeback game when he ruptured the ligaments/fractured a bone in his thumb whichwill see him out for up to 3 months.Surfers have a squad of 27 this year (only 18 last year) and team spirit and camaraderie amongstthe boys is growing week by week which is pleasing from a coaching point of view.
